In this Life at ADT Blog, we’re joined by James Brevard, Master Installation Technician, whose remarkable career journey underscores his recent achievement of being named the Foundation for Advancing Security Technology Security (FAST) Technician of the Year. With 18+ years working at ADT, James’s career showcases how ADT empowered him to take ownership of his career, driving him to excel and earn this prestigious award.

Describe your current role and responsibilities at ADT?

My role at ADT is a Master Installation Technician. I install, train, and demonstrate how the products that ADT offers work. My core responsibilities include installing burglar and fire alarms in homes and businesses, as well as CCTV, access control, and intercom systems.

How has ADT supported your professional growth and development?

ADT has given me all the tools and information to help make me a better technician and employee. I am certified in Brivo, Eagle Eye and Alarm.com systems and I’ve become more comfortable educating customers and other employees. Throughout my career, I’ve become a much better leader, passing along all my experiences and knowledge to help others strive to be their best as well.

What has been one of the most memorable or impactful moments in your career at ADT?

One memorable installation experience that comes to mind was when I worked at a museum that was vandalized and the property was significantly damaged. We had to go through the whole museum, fixing up the cameras that got destroyed, all the way up to the rooftop to set up additional ones. The smell of the fire was still lingering while we were putting in new wiring for the cameras.

Luckily, most of the historical artifacts were able to be saved. I never imagined I’d be part of something so important: protecting history that was almost lost. Adding extra surveillance made me feel like I was needed, like I was making a significant contribution to the security world. This experience made me feel especially proud to be a Technician at ADT.

Share a bit about your career journey and how you came to work at ADT?

I’ve always been interested in electronics and how they can integrate to help people feel safe and protected.

I originally started with Brinks Home Security in 2006 and around 2010, ADT acquired that company. I stayed on board for the entire merger and I’m very happy that I did because ADT has always been known as the top security company in the industry.

What does being named the FAST Security Technician of the Year mean to you? What do you believe were the key factors or achievements that led to your winning the award?

Being named Technician of the Year was a huge shock and surprise. I feel very honored to have been nominated for this and was beyond excited to win the award. ADT recognized my commitment in my willingness to help others and go above and beyond, no matter what. I try to always go out of my way to help anyone who needs it, during work and after.
